Setup and Maintenance of the Unit

Overheating

1. Left, Right (Front Speakers)
Front speakers carry primarily music and sound
effects.
2. Center
In surround mode, the center speaker carries most
of the dialog as well as music and effects.
It should be set between the left and right
speakers.
3. Surround (Rear Speakers)
The surround speakers’ overall sound balance
should be as close as possible to the front speakers.
Proper placement is vital to establish an evenly
distributed sound field.
4. Subwoofer
A subwoofer is designed to reproduce powerful
low bass effects (explosions, the rumble of
spaceships, etc.).
Magnetic Shielding
Speakers placed less than two feet from the TV set
must be magnetically shielded in order to prevent
picture distortion. Center speaker provided with
this unit is magnetically shielded to protect your
TV set.
Front Speaker Placement
For best results, follow the speaker placement
below.
Alignment
Align the center speaker evenly with (A) or slightly
behind (B) (the left and right speakers), but not
ahead of them.
Angle
Place the left and right speakers to form a 45-
degree angle with your favorite viewing position
to duplicate the soundtrack mixer’s perspective.
Height
The three front speakers should be as close as
possible to the same height. This often requires
placing the center speaker directly on top (A) or
beneath (B) the TV set.

Better Surround Placement
Location
If possible, place surround speakers to either side of the listening area, not behind it.
Height
If space permits, install surround speakers 2-3 feet above viewers. This helps to minimize localization
effects.
Aiming
Aim surround speakers straight across the room, not down at viewers, to help create a more open, spacious
surround sound field.
Alternative Surround Placement
Rear wall
If rear wall mounting is the only choice, aim the speakers at each other (A), towards the front (B) or towards
the sidewalls (C, D).
Experiment with placement until sounds seem to surround you, rather than come from behind you.
No adjacent walls
Surround speakers can go on stands facing each other to approximate sidewall mounting (A), or to the
sides or rear of the viewing area, aimed upwards; they can go right on the floor, or preferably, a few feet
off the floor such as on end tables (B).

Digital Connection
The digital audio jacks can accept Dolby Digital (Surround Sound) or PCM (Stereo) signals when
compatible components are connected.
• This unit provides one optical and one coaxial digital input jacks for the connection of your
components that have digital audio outputs.
• To connect DVD player, Satellite receiver, Cable box, Blu-ray player or TV that has a digital audio
output, use a coaxial digital (included) or an optical digital cable (not included) to carry the audio
signal and enjoy Dolby Digital sound quality.
• A separate optical or coaxial cable is needed for each digital connection.
Notes: • If your TV has digital audio output, you can connect it to the corresponding digital
audio input of the system instead of using analog connection.
• Optical and coaxial cables carry only the audio portion of the signal.

Connecting the speakers
Speaker wires are color-coded to match the terminals. Connect the speaker wire from the back of each
speaker to the corresponding color terminal at the back of the unit. Press down the tab to open the
terminal and insert the wire. Release the tab to lock wire in the terminal.
When connecting the speakers, make sure the polarities (“+“ speaker wire to “+“ on the unit. For example,
red wire to red terminal on the unit) of speaker wires and terminals match.
If the cords are reversed, the sound will be distorted. Do not let the speaker wires touch each other, it will
damage the Home Theater’s amplifier.
Connecting the Antennas
Connect the AM and FM antennas to the AM and FM terminals on the system’s back panel.
They must be hooked up in order to receive clear reception. For FM reception, extend antenna to its full
length. For AM reception, rotate the antenna horizontally to get better reception.

AM Loop Antenna and FM Indoor Antenna
1. Uncoil the antenna wire and locate the base end of the AM antenna.
2. Press down on the antennas tab to open the terminal.
3. Insert the antenna wires into the terminal and release the tabs to secure the wires in place.
4. Make sure the white wire on the AM loop antenna is inserted into the AM loop terminal and the other
wire is inserted into the ground loop terminal.
Digital Input
Connect components, such as DVD players, Satellite receiver/Cable boxes, BD (Blu-ray Disc
TM
) players or TVs,
capable of outputting Dolby Digital (Surround Sound) or standard PCM (Stereo) format digital signals.

I found this in the great clean out of 2010, Bridgeport, Connecticuit. Once upon a time, I had a slightly newer version of this, I think from 1972 or so. This version is from 1964 and gives a complete run down of most small tubes that were manufactured back then.
There is something about a well designed, well maintained piece of tube gear. I remember an old Collins tube console that was in a production room at a small AM station. The console went dead (paper clip shorted the B+) and I fixed it.
I recall listening to the test recording of my own voice from a reel to reel machine when I fixed the console. It sounded better than I’d ever heard it, not that I have a great radio voice, by any means.
A tube is a voltage amplifier versus a transistor, which is a current amplifier. A tube does not have the same fidelity as a transistor, as the voltage reaches it’s peak, it gets a little fuzzy, adding some distortion and harmonics. Tube gear adds warmth, what a musician might call Timbre. The combination of fundamental frequency and varying amplitudes of harmonic frequencies that allow a listener to tell the difference between a piano and a guitar playing the same note.
This is what the current crop of tube mic preamps and other tube products tries to reproduce. Several companies have come out with an amplifier design that has mostly transistors and one tube, usually a 12AX7. Unfortunately, at least in my opinion, the fall a little short. If you want to have the “tube sound,” it needs to be all hollow state.
What is intriguing to me are the schematic diagrams in the back of the book. There is one for an audio amplifier:
This is a single channel unit, for stereo, it would need to be duplicated. Also, I would loose the tube rectifier in favor of a solid state full wave bridge, that would simplify T2 somewhat. The OA2 could also be changed to a diode. Looks like unbalanced audio in, which could be modified with an input transformer.
Another interesting diagram is this one, which can be used as a mic preamp:
That looks like a pretty solid design, a few tweaks here or there to add some gain reduction and some type of output level adjustment and I would be a really cool piece of gear. Again, the tube rectifier could be replaced with something solid state. The output transformer would likely have to be changed to something like 600 ohms.
Couple that to something like this, the Collins 26U compressor/limiter, and one would have a great sounding microphone processor:

Looks pretty cool. R10 is used to balance the two plate currents. I would be interested in the transformer values, input/output impedances, voltages, etc. The 6386 tube is very hard to find these days, a good substitute would be a 5670 which are still made by several manufactures.
